For better or worse, there is comfort in the status quo. We slide into a daily, weekly and annual routine with familiar challenges, experiences and responses. There are predictable rewards and predictable frustrations. And on a day when the frustrations run high, the “what if?” thoughts percolate to the surface.

  • How important to you is work-life balance?
  • How important to you are opportunities for personal growth?
  • What level of income do you require? Why?
  • What is your vision for your future lifestyle and career?

In evaluating a career move, consider the following:

  • How will this position bring you satisfaction? Why?
  • What are the dissatisfiers? Why?
  • How well does the position fit the profile you created above?
  • What are the tradeoffs?
  • What options does this position open up, and what options does it close?
  • How does the new opportunity compare to your current status?

You can’t have it all. By definition, you can’t concurrently stay in the same place and step into something new. Know yourself. Explore the possibilities. And step into those opportunities that are right for you.
